Darfur, Sudan
This shows the Darfur people suffering from their mistreatment. There is a large group which shows how many people were effected by this massacre.
Located
in the western part of Sudan is a region called Darfur. It is the home of over
a 100 tribes which consists of 600 million people. The people that live here
are all Muslims, some nomads and farmers. Omar Bashir took control of Sudan in
1989 which caused mass amounts of weapons to come to Sudan, and conflict
increased between the nomadic tribes and the African farmers. There were two Darfuri
rebel movements that occurred in 2003, the Sudan Liberation Army and the
Justice and Equality movement. This happened because the people did not think they
were being protected by the by the attacks of nomads. The government of Sudan
did not like this and retaliated by releasing Arab militia known as the Janjaweed.
The militia attacked hundreds of villages in Sudan, which over 400 of them were
completely destroyed and millions of people were forced to leave their homes (“Genocide
in Darfur, n.d”). The African farmers and other civilians in Darfur are being
systematically killed each day and are also being displaced if they are not
murdered. The Janjaweed is responsible for these actions and the Sudanese
government denies any affiliation with them. Although they deny any affiliation
with the Janjaweed, no action is being made to restrict the actions of the
Janjaweed. Today, Sudan is still suffering from displacement in their
communities and murder. Approximately 2.7 million Darfuris are displaced in
camps and 4.7 million Darfuris rely on humanitarian aid to survive in Darfur (“Genocide
in Darfur,n.d”). Although the Holocaust happened in the 1940’s does not mean that
it is still not occurring today but in a different country. The Holocaust and
the genocide in Darfur share similar characteristics and they also share differences.
During these mass genocides, multiple cultures were affected.
This shows a map of Sudan. It includes the western side which is a lighter color than the rest of the country. It shows North Darfur, West Darfur, and South Darfur which are all a part of this mass genocide.
